QCD Vacuum and Axions: What’s Happening?
نویسنده
چکیده
A deeper understanding of the vacuum structure in QCD invites one to rethink certain aspects of the axion physics. The recent advances are mostly due to developments in supersymmetric gauge theories and the brane theory, in which QCD can be embedded. They include, but are not limited to, the studies of metastable vacua in multicolor gluodynamics, and the domain walls. We briefly review basics of the axion physics and then present a modern perspective on a rich interplay between the QCD vacuum structure and axion physics. ————————————— An expanded version of a review talk given by G.G. at “Continuous Advances in QCD 2002/Arkadyfest”, honoring the 60’th birthday of Arkady Vainshtein, Minneapolis, May 17 May 23, 2002.

Qcd, Strong Cp and Axions
The physical origin of the strong CP problem in QCD, rooted in the structures of the vacuum of the standard model, is reviewed. The chiral solution to this problem, with its accompanying axion, is explained and various characteristics of axions are detailed. Although visible axion models are excluded experimentally, models with very light and very weakly coupled axions are still tenable. The as...
متن کاملThe Strong CP Problem and Axions
I describe how the QCD vacuum structure, necessary to resolve the U(1)A problem, predicts the presence of a P, T and CP violating term proportional to the vacuum angle θ̄. To agree with experimental bounds, however, this parameter must be very small (θ̄ ≤ 10). After briefly discussing some possible other solutions to this, so-called, strong CP problem, I concentrate on the chiral solution propose...
متن کاملStrong CP: No Problem
Detailed analysis shows that the phase of a complex mass term of a quark does not violate CP, while the QCD vacuum angle can naturally be set equal to zero. There is no strong CP problem and no need for axions or similar speculative constructions to be experimentally looked for. Talk given at THEP-I, IIT Roorkee, March 2005

Studies of the motion and decay of axion walls bounded by strings. Abstract We discuss the appearance at the QCD phase transition, and the subsequent decay, of axion walls bounded by strings in N = 1 axion models. We argue on intuitive grounds that the main decay mechanism is into barely relativistic axions. We present numerical simulations of the decay process. In these simulations, the decay ...

(by H. Murayama) In this section we list limits for very light neutral (pseudo) scalar bosons that couple weakly to stable matter. They arise if there is a global continuous symmetry in the theory that is spontaneously broken in the vacuum. If the symmetry is exact, it results in a massless Nambu{Goldstone (NG) boson. If there is a small explicit breaking of the symmetry, either already in the ...
